Pascal Ulli was born in 1969 in Bern, Switzerland, where he took private acting lessons with Marie-Louise Lang-Willi in as early as his school days. After graduating from high school he studied acting under the direction of Uta Hagen at New York City's renowned H.-B. Studio. There he got in touch with the American art of Method Acting and decided to devote all his inspiration and energy to it. Back in Switzerland Ulli initiated and produced the multimedia-mise en scène of David Mamet's 'Sexual Perversity in Chicago', also playing one of the main characters. Owing to Ulli's performance and that of Igor Bauersima, Ingrid Sattes and Alexander Seibt, this production was a surprising success. All shows were sold out. Bauersima, Sattes, Seibt and Ulli decided to continue their theatrical co-operation and founded the Off-Off Bühne. This resulted in several productions, in which Ulli acted and produced. By consequently using film elements and Method Acting in their work the Off-Off Bühne expanded the meaning of the term "movie theater" and addressed a new audience. The effort of this young theater group also caused a sensation abroad. The productions 'Tourist Saga'; 'Forever Godard', and 'Context' were chosen from 300 productions by the German Impulse Theater Festival and were invited to city-tours of the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen in 1995, '98, and '99. In 1998 the Off-Off-Bühne received the Festival's main prize for their production 'Forever Godard', making it the first time that this important award went to a Swiss troupe. Besides his engagement at the Off-Off Bühne, Ulli has continued to work as an independent actor for other theatrical and film productions. In Switzerland he is known to a large public as Klaus Koska in the Swiss cult-thriller 'Nacht der Gaukler'. For this performance he won the audience award Cinéprix Télécom '96 as best promising European actor at the international film festival Stars de Demain in Geneva. After many Swiss movies, he played his first leading part in the German film 'Over the Rainbow' released in German movie theaters in autumn 1999. In search of a new challenge Pascal Ulli worked out a solo project. In march '99 he presented 'In den Strassen von New York' (The Basketball Diaries) in Zürich. In this production he was actor, director, and producer. This small straight work electrified the press, played over 30 times and was invited to the international Fringe Theater Festival in New York. Ulli presented his show in English at the St. Marks Theater. The New York shows were sold out and got frantic reviews. Following this success, he produced 'Der Kellner' with his wife Caroline Ulli. This one-actor-play with Klaus Henner Russius was written and directed by the couple. All shows were sold out and the press and especially the audience were thrilled. 'Ansichten eines Clowns', the next production of Caroline and Pascal Ulli, was an even bigger success in Zürich: more than 1000 people came to see Ulli's performance as the clown Hans Schnier.
Before he managed to get accepted into 'Uta Hagen' (qv)'s acting school he was 15 times rejected by others and had to survive as video salesman and factory worker., Avid backgammon player.
